I don't think it's too much to ask for decency. Why shouldn't you expect to be treated with kindness and respect? Even if it's from a total stranger. Especially when you do the same no matter what. I was raised to treat people the way I would want to be treated. Of course I'm not perfect but I try really hard to do the right thing. Lack of integrity is one of my biggest pet peeves. It's hard to have faith in people when you see some of the things going on around the world but there is a lot of good out there. But I also completely understand how you feel. I have been told that I shouldn't expect too much from people and I say bull!
